JUNE 2011

In February we had a demonstration on "Soft Furnishings" when Isobel Robertson showed us the finer points of making curtains and cushions.


In March, Frances Drysdale demonstrated "Flower Arranging" and gave us lots of hints and tips.  Members then had an opportunity to do their own arrangements using three blooms.


In April we had a very good turn out to our "Open Night" in the Masonic Hall, when we had a short talk on Health and Beauty by Ashley Henderson from "Senses", followed by a demonstration by the "Brig Belly Dancers", then everyone was invited to "have a go" - and quite a few did!  A very enjoyable evening was had by all.


The last meeting of the session is on Wed 18th May when we have our AGM. There will be demonstrations by members, which will include bead making, felting, and making boxes from old Christmas cards.

In December members enjoyed a lovely Christmas Meal at "Tiffin", Newburgh when Santa paid us a visit and everyone received a parcel. To round off the evening we sang some Christmas Carols.

Unfortunately the January meeting was cancelled due to the unavailability of the speaker and the illness of several members.

JUNE 2012

The next meeting is the AGM on Wednesday 16th May, the last meeting for the Session. This will take the form of a "Members Night" when it is hope some members will demonstrate their skills, or tell of excit- ing experiences. Regular Meetings start again in September and details will appear in the next issue of the Crier.

In March we had a very interesting meeting when Stuart Skinner told us about his involvement with setting up "T in the Park".

In April we had a very successful "Open Night" when we had a very good attendance of visitors and friends. May Webster showed how to make sugar paste flowers and Jenny Wightman displayed her beautiful paintings and told us a little bit about each one. Tea and tasty bites were served by the Committee and a large raffle was drawn.

JUNE 2013

The last meeting for this session is on Wed 15th May, which is the AGM, when we have Margaret Skinner giving a demonstration of flower arranging.  Competitions are:  "Arrangement in an Unusual Container" and "Flower of the Month".  The Points Winner for the year will be announced.  There will also be Tea, Sales Table, and Raffle.

Our meeting in April was an "Open Night" in the Masonic Hall when we had a Talk on the History of Beads and a Demonstration of Jewellery Making by Pat Dick.  Also Exhibition and Sale of items including hand made bags.  We had a good turn out of members and friends and a very successful Sales Table which raised £35 in aid of RSABI.  Tea and tasty bites were served by the committee.  A Raffle was drawn.

Competitions: "Favourite Necklace" 1st  Elizabeth Taylor, 2nd Alison Smart, 3rd Chris Stewart.  "Flower of the Month" 1st  Alison Smart, 2nd Elizabeth Taylor, 3rd Pat Miller.

At our meeting in October we had Lou Jaap from "Loving Hands" Knitting for Charity Group. Members were enthralled by Lou's story about how she set up her group, and she showed many wonderful items knitted and sewn by her members. The items go to many charities and organisations in this country and all over the world. Competitions: Baby's Beanie Hat – 1st Sandra Hutchison, 2nd Pat Miller, 3rd Ann Christie. Flower of the Month – 1st Anne Brews, 2nd Alison Smart, 3rd Betty Morrison. There were 12 beanie hats entered and they were donated to "Loving Hands", along with another 50+ knitted by members and friends. Well done ladies!

In March we had Neal Robertson from Tannochbrae Tearoom, Auchtermuchty, who told us how he became a "Champion Porridge Maker".  Neal prepared some of his "Speciality" porridge for members to taste and the verdict was "delicious".  He also brought along a supply of his invention, a rounded wooden porridge spoon or "Spon" which were quickly snapped up by members.  Neal judged the competitions which were: 3 Oatcakes - 1st   Elizabeth Taylor, 2nd  Patricia Miller, 3rd  Wilma Whyte.  Flower of the Month - 1st  Elizabeth Taylor, 2nd  Ann Christie, 3rd  Betty Morrison.

In April we had Shona Simpson who gave a very interesting presentation on her trip to India and she showed us pictures on her laptop of the orphanages around Chennai, formerly Madras.  Shona judged the competitions which were:  Pretty Cup & Saucer – 1st Evelyn Sutherland, 2nd  Jane Sanderson, 3rd  Margaret Haxton.  Flower of the Month – 1st   Isabel McDonald, 2nd  Anne Brews, 3rd  Ann Christie.

Next meeting is our AGM on Wed 21st  May, when we have a Presentation by member, Jane Sanderson on "Chakra", and we will find out who has won the Points Trophies for this year.  Competitions: "3 Chocolate Brownies" & "Flower of the Month".

We held our "Open Night" on Wednesday 15th October in the Masonic Hall, when we had a good turn out of members and visitors. Beaton Lindsay, Butcher, Perth, told us about the family business, then demonstrated "simple supper dishes", ably assisted by his two delightful daughters Lola and Olivia. The dishes were then raffled. Tea and tasty bites were then served by the committee, then the large raffle was drawn. There was also a Sales Table, and thanks go to all who brought and purchased items and who bought raffle tickets and brought raffle prizes, and enabled us to raise some money for our funds. Competition Winners were:
Dish of Pate – 1st Wilma Whyte, 2nd Pat Miller, 3rd Chris Stewart.
Flower of the Month – 1st Elizabeth Taylor, 2nd Alison Smart, 3rd Jane Sander- son.

JUNE 2015

At our April meeting we had a "hands-on" Napkin Art class with Dorothy Morris. The ladies very much enjoyed this and produced some lovely pots (see pic).  Competition winners were:  Healthy Lunch Box - 1st Ann Christie, 2nd Elizabeth Taylor, 3rd Wilma Whyte.  Flower of the Month - 1st Jane Sanderson, 2nd Ann Christie, 3rd Evelyn Scobie.  Points Winners for the year are:  1st Ann Christie, Runner-up Elizabeth Taylor.  Best Trier Pat Miller and Chris Stewart (equal).

Our next meeting is our AGM on Wed 20th May.  Unfortunately our speaker is unable to come due to illness so a speaker still has to be arranged.  Competitions are: 3 Pieces of Tablet and Flower of the Month.  The Points Trophies will be presented at this meeting.

Over the Summer months we will be preparing our entries for the Perth, and Kinross Shows in August. DECEMBER 2015

The new Session began in September with a Talk by Ian Bett on “100 Years of The Berries”. This was very much enjoyed by everyone and brought back a few memories. In October we had Janet McDonald who told us how to get new ideas off the ground. This too was very much enjoyed by everyone.

DECEMBER 2018

Meetings are normally held in the Church Session House, but due to the church being closed during refurbishment, meetings have recently been held in the Masonic hall.  We hope to return to the Session House in the New Year.  

Meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month from September to May each year and start at 7.15pm.  New members and visitors are always welcome. Membership for 2018/2019 is £30, visitors £4 per meeting.


At our October meeting we welcomed Gillian Skene who demonstrated jewellery, knitted with silver plated thread and beads.  Several members had a go.  Gillian brought along some examples of her beautiful work.  Competition Winners:  Favourite piece of jewellery 1st L Farmer, 2nd B Baird, 3rd M Cole.  Flower of the Month 1st J Sanderson, 2nd E Taylor, 3rd B Baird.

In November we have a Baking Demo with Christine Taylor.

At our November meeting we enjoyed a baking demonstration by Christine Taylor from Strathallan.  Competition Winners:  Mincemeat Pies – 1st B Baird, 2nd E Taylor, 3rd E Kettles.  Flower of the Month – 1st B Baird, 2nd E Taylor, 3rd E Kettles.

In December we enjoyed a lovely Christmas Meal at Bein Inn.  Competition Winners: Pretty Parcel – 1st E Sutherland, 2nd B Baird, 3rd E Taylor.

At our January meeting we enjoyed a talk from Bill Nicoll, former BBC Correspondent.  Competition Winners:  Mushroom Soup – 1st S Scobie, 2nd E Scobie, 3rd B Baird.  Flower of the Month – 1st B Baird, 2nd E Taylor, 3rd L Farmer.

JUNE 2019

In February we had Needle Felting with Jay Hutchison.  This was  “hands on” and members enjoyed making a bumble bee.  Competition winners: Victoria Sponge 1st B Baird, 2nd E Scobie, 3rd E Taylor.  Flower of the Month 1st  L Farmer, 2nd B Baird, 3rd E Taylor.

In March we had a very interesting Talk by Mr Ian Agnew, former Rector of Perth High School, entitled Tales of Russia.  Competition winners: 1st L Farmer, 2nd B Baird, 3rd E Kettles.  Flower of the Month 1st B Baird, 2nd S Scobie, 3rd L Farmer.

In March we also held a very successful Quiz.

In April we had an Open Night when we welcomed Laura from Wiltshire Farm Foods, who gave a very interesting insight into the company and brought along some meals for us to taste.  Competition winners: Small Apple Tart 1st E Scobie, 2nd B Baird. Flower of the Month 1st B Baird, 2nd E Kettles, 3rd M Corbishley.


Our next meeting is our AGM on Wednesday 15th May when we have a Members Night and presentation of the Annual Points Trophies.  Competitions that evening will be:  Favourite Bowl and Flower of the Month.

DECEMBER 2021

Abernethy SWI met on Wed 20th October, the first time since February 2020.  Everyone was glad to be back and enjoyed a chat over a cup of tea.  Future meetings were discussed, and the next meeting on November 17th is to be a Members’ Night.  The meeting on December 15th will be a Christmas Meal out, venue to be arranged.  No meeting In January, and February meeting to be arranged.  Information about each meeting will be placed on the Village Notice Board and on Abernethy SWI Facebook page.  New members will be made very welcome.

JUNE 2022


Abernethy SWI met on the 16th of March when we had a “Hands On” Papercraft demo showing us how to make small notebooks and gift bags.

At our meeting on 20th April, Evelyn Scobie demonstrated paper flowers, and all members made a flower.

The meeting on 18th May will be our AGM 1.00pm to 3.00pm.  After the business we will have a Quiz.  This will be our last meeting until 21st September.  Further details will be published in the next Village Crier.
